And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full. Deuteronomy 11:15
Large Blacks
The Large Black pig is a native to Southwestern England. Originally known as the Lop Eared Black, the breed was selected for large size and efficiency of production on pasture and other forages. The breeds popularity peaked during the 1920's. After World War II, however, the shift toward intensive husbandry of pigs led to the decline of outdoor breeds that were not competitive indoors. The Large Black nearly became extinct during the 60's, and it remains one of the rarest British pig breeds. Today The Animal Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) lists the breed as critical. As its name implies, the breed is large framed and solid black, lop ears fall forward over it's face, and while they are not impediment to sight, they protect the eyes from damage while the pig is rooting and foraging. The Large Black is best known for its foraging abilities and maternal qualities. Large Black sows are able to raise and wean large litters of piglets out of doors and these survival characteristics give it genetic quality. Mature boars weigh 700 - 800 lbs and sows 600 - 700 lbs as an adult. Because of the increased interest in pasture raised pork by consumers, Large Black hogs are beginning to be recognized as a great choice in pastured management systems. The above was taken from The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy website
While selling our grass-fed beef, pastured chickens and eggs at local markets we had many requests for pork. So we decided to look into some heritage breeds of hogs. We wanted to choose a breed that would not only offer tasty pork for our customers but we also were not willing to compromise on the standards at which we think our food should be raised. We chose the Large Black. We were impressed with there size, temperament, ability to raise young outside, and most of all, the ability they have to forage and thrive in our pastures. They are a true joy to be around.
We are now taking deposits for Large Black piglets. Our registered spring litter was born 4.16.11. They will be ready for their new homes in about 8 weeks. Pictures have been posted on our Graceful Grazers Facebook page! We are expecting one litter fall 2011. Our current bloodlines are Prudence, Warbler, and Majestic. We will be able to offer more bloodlines and breeding pairs in 2012.
